Victoria Kaiulani Cleghorn, Kaiulani by many, was the last Princess of the Hawaiian monarchy. This book starts with her age 13 to 18. Kaiulani, born to Princess Miriam Likelike and her scottish husband, Archibald Scott Cleghorn, was second in line for the Hawaiian throne. Even though Kaiulani had lost her mother at young age, the early parts of this book depicts a rich, royal childhood which includes her developped and true friendship with author Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island). Kaiulani is sent to England for an education. She becomes homesick for her tropical homeland but adapts to England which becomesa second home, pied-a-terre. She longs for her family and homeland more when she hears of the political troubles between the Hawaiian Royalistes and the American businessmen who want Hawaii for America. When Kaiulani's uncle, the King, dies, her Aunt Liliuokalani, takes the throne but is soon pushed off by the Americans. Kaiulani, 18, rushes to America to plead with the Americans to not take her land. Though her efforts admirable and brave, Kaiulani does not suceed. Throughout the story and beyond, she suffers many tragic losses of friends and relatives. In the end, she dies at age twenty-three. This was my first book on Hawaiian history and through this book, I think I will pursue others on Hawaiian monarchy and history. Kaiulani has wonderful characterization and this book really shows how tragic things might have drove her to an early death. She had a hard life of losses of friends and her land. Despite what some reviewers might have said, she was intelligent and brave. She tried to help her country when it was in need though other forces pushed against her, she did her best for her people and her land. This was the tragic and real life tale of the last Hawaiian Princess.

Princess Ka`iulani was sent to England to continue her education. The young princess suffered many tragic losses in her short life. She goes through an enormous amount of pain while she's away from her home. Ka`iulani tried as hard as she could to not let Hawai`i go in the hands of America. Unfortunately, she failed.
I really loved this book! I was so happy when I found out about it because I thought they would NEVER publish one about an Hawaiian princess. (I was also happy because I live in Hawai`i!) After all, Hawai`i tends to be left out. I hope you enjoy this book! )
This book was different from the other Royal Diaries, but I liked it. I have read it 3 times now, and am very glad I bought it!
Love the book
I thought the Nzingha diary was awful, but at least I finished it. (Though I may not have if it hadn't been so short.) This diary on the other hand I didn't get through. About one third of the way through the book I became incredibly bored and couldn't bring myself to waste any more of my time reading it. I will give it two stars though because it features Hawaiian royalty. I bet most people don't know Hawaii ever had a royal family.
I have read several of The Royal Diaries books, and found this one to be the slowest and most uninteresting of all. The child perpetually whines, and there is no grip in the writing. Perhaps this one lacked flavor, being too modern.
There are so many better Royal Diaries books, I am sad to have spoilt my view of the series, with this edition.
It certainly did not do the graceful princess any justice!

Addendum There is one thing I feel, in all fairness, to add. The Goodbye poem that Mr.Stephenson wrote to the princess was just so beautiful and touching. Very real!

This Princess Diary presents a fascinating view of American imperialism, and is a sad and touching commentary on the life of Hawaii's last princess.

While away at school in England, Kaiulani is horrified to learn that her grandfather the king has passed away, and her aunt has been deposed as the rightful queen by the American investors that are determined to annex Hawaii (by force) to the United States. These investors, having already forced the king to strip the voting rights from the native Hawaiians in favor of the Americans, are incensed at the new queen's attempt to restore those voting rights to the people. When they take over in a military coup, Kaiulani wisely travels to the United States to plead her country's case before the military and the U.S. president. When the president rules in favor of the royal family, and demands that the Americans give Hawaii back to the Hawaiians, the investors refuse and simply declare themselves the new rulers of Hawaii. Kaiulani lives out the rest of her days in mournful sadness, having seen her country plundered and her rightful place stolen from her.

As a Princess Diary, there is a great deal else here to enjoy. Kaiulani strikes up a heart-warming friendship with author Robert Louis Stevenson, and they share a great deal of wisdom and insight in their literary discussions. Kaiulani struggles bravely with her intense homesickness, having been sent halfway around the world, into a new culture and a new climate, and strives to excel in her studies in spite of the turmoil that dwells within her. A fascinating view of Hawaiian culture, her language, and her people is presented, as Kaiulani learns the ways of her people and their beliefs and dreams.

Though the American reader is grateful that this beautiful land enriches our country with its presence in our union, we can still be saddened that our ancestors did not act with more charity and kindness, wooing this lovely land instead of attempting to steal it. And the reader remembers, gently, that those who do not learn from the past may repeat the same mistakes.
