This book is a mess.My biggest issue, aside from how little I liked the main character, is how problematic this book is. There's a ton of casual racism (mostly against/about Native people including the MC literally painting her face and body brown and adopting an accent to pass as a Native main) and sexism all over the place.
The love interest for this book, by the way, is a creep that threatens and attempts to rape the MC multiple times until he finally does rape her after scaring the heck out of her (kidnapping her to his residence and them chasing her even after she hurts herself trying to escape) and of course, she "never knew it could be like that".
I also didn't care for the fact that the author's world building made of impossible to tell when the a story was set and it lacked a lot of detail into how the world changes with the UK being an unquestioned colonial power way longer than it should.)

I stayed up 3 hours past my bedtime to finish this book and I purchased the sequel as soon as possible.
This book has an truly alternate 20th century North America. So Often Alternative history do not consider the branching effects of the changes that is supposed and the citizen of the new world act as if ideas thoughts and behavior of 20th or 21th century are inevitable. The inhabitants of Ms. Viehl world do not live in anything remotely similar to ours.
This is a dark and textured novel that resonates with current world wide issues.
The novel does use an Anglicized version of English that I thought added greatly to the world building but for those who may find it confusing a glossary was provided.
Excellent story of a woman who discovers her magical ability is having no magic. She is a skeptic in every way. Fun read.
First, I do have to say that it was a major turn off to see the price for this book was twice as high in kindle form than if I'd bought it as a paperback but after reading a sample I bought it. It was a very well told story that I recommend. Give the sample a try. I also bought the second book in the series and enjoyed that as well and I'm looking forward to any additional volumes.
I enjoyed the author's way of building the world one piece at a time, with terms and concepts commonly used in Victorian England. The world she builds isn't pretty, and the treatment of women in this time is accurately portrayed, which is a challenge the main character fights while battling with magic, politics and a steampunk version of science fiction. The action moves quickly and the main character is a strong female whose interior dialogues reveal a very independent woman who may be attracted to a male but doesn't jump into his arms just because he is an alpha male.
I'm looking forward to the third book in this series, as each book is a finished plot and not a serial with cliff hangers at the end.
I enjoy stories set in alternate universes but found the setting for this book, an alternate Victorian era particularly fun to experience. The names for common objects are slightly off, but logical ie BrewsMaid is an automatic tea maker, a carri is a carriage, coddles are chunks of cod, etc, which is part of the fun of book. Within this setting, which is even more socially stratified then the real Victorian era, and in which women have no authority or power, the heroine "Kit" manages to successfully function as a private detective and magic debunker.
I liked this woman, her courage, determination, intelligence and her loyalty and I enjoyed her friends who are appealing secondary characters. The fantastic plot is implausible but true within itself and Lynn Viehl never losses control of her story.
I enjoyed the Darkyn series but this is different and,in its way, more satisfying. There are death mages, immortals villains and magic but Kit's feet are firmly planted on the ground of the world in which she operates and she is an admirable guide.
The world building creates a fascinating place; however, the author isn't skilled enough to really bring it together. Most of the plotlines were incredibly confusing at best and downright incoherent at worst. There's so much information thrown at the reader and a lot of it isn't fleshed out enough to make sense. The plot just kept jumping around from one thread to another in a really jarring way.
I found the introduction of the Tillers and the Reapers to be part where the narrative begins its extreme downward spiral. Everything after that is just ludicrous. Especially every effort Kit makes to stop it. Spoiler the first time she goes to the docks and then walks away from killing Lucien was so stupid. I mean don't even include that part. It's completely ridiculous. There's really no build in the story; things just sort of start happening all over the place.
The Relationships
What did I just read? Their romance made no sense and was vaguely creepy with the background information the author chose to include beforehand; he had her kidnapped, gagged, and then "put his hands on her". That's assault and in no ways attractive. They barely had any interaction in the book besides arguing with each other; they don't even respect each others' opinions or ideas, but guess what, they're in love. The entire thing was a little sickening and grossly underdeveloped. I really wasn't a fan. I also hate insta-love stories because they're sooooooo weak.
Ok so the premis of the book is kind of cool, however the main character is such a bitch. She doesn't believe anybody about anything. Surrounded by magic, her grandfathers ghost who can possess others, which she has seen with her own eyes! Yet she continually is "outraged" when others talk and her tell her about magical incidences. Im at the part where Lucien is trying to explain who her grandfather and his father are and their tree possessed past, heh, and of course she doesn't believe him and thinks he's a loon. Really she should be smacked (again) for being daft. Really not a very likable character.
This book is a mess.
My biggest issue, aside from how little I liked the main character, is how problematic this book is. There's a ton of casual racism (mostly against/about Native people including the MC literally painting her face and body brown and adopting an accent to pass as a Native main) and sexism all over the place.
