This is a book about the history of England from 1462 to 1472 and is narrated by Lady Anne Neville, the youngest daughter of the Earl of Warwick, the Kingmaker. The book starts in 1469 when the Earl Warwick and his family escaped from England to save their lives after the Earl started a second rebellion against the King Edward IV in order to replace him with the king's younger brother, also the husband of the Earl's oldest daughter. Then the book goes back to 1462, when the Earl had dethroned Henry VI and had made Edward IV the king of England, and it ends in 1472 when Anne Neville and Richard of Gloucester (Richard III later) had a son together. (You need to read the book to find out what happens in between.)

Reading books like this one which contain mostly actual events, sprinkled with fiction is my preference over reading fiction since no writer, no matter how talented, can come up with a story line this unbelievable, rich, and complex. Some historical fictions are so engaging and detailed, some are very entertaining, and yet others have a lot of historical details or a lot of romance. This books has a little of all these qualities. I really enjoyed this book which flows nicely and is well-written with the exception of having a lot of local English expressions and terms.

I enjoyed this novel. I've been looking for fictional depictions of Richard III where he is shown neither as a complete villain nor a saint. I believe this author did a credible job of portraying Richard Plantagenet as a three-dimensional character. I also liked this interpretation of Anne Neville, who has more backbone than some fictional portrayals I've read. The other characters--Anne's parents, her sister Isobel, Richard's brothers Edward IV and Clarence, Margaret of Anjou and her son, and Louis XI of France--were all well written. I particularly liked the portrayal of Louis, the Spider King. The author made a wise choice to conclude the novel when she did since this romance did not end `happily ever after'.

If you enjoyed this novel, I highly recommend The Seventh Son by Reay Tannahill and The Sunne in Splendor by Sharon Kay Penman. The Virgin Widow
The end of the book leaves the reader wanting more. I mean, where are the years of Anne as Queen of England? The author, at the back of the book, states what happens. I want to read it in words! What did Anne think of her husband being accused for murdering his nephews in the Tower of London? Did she believe that her house would now be cursed becuase of Richard's actions? Another thing that I don't like, why is Anne so sure of her feelings for Richard, but when it comes to her marriage to the Prince of Wales, she does not say if she hates him or petties him. As for the detials that happen with her father, Warwick, would the real Anne consider him to be a traitor or a man of ambition. Let's face it, without him, Edward IV would never have become king. Also, I would have loved to see Anne during her final years. What would have been her thoughts as she lay dying? Would she have believed her husband to be as curel as everyone thought he was or just a man at the wrong place at the wrong time? This book is very good, and I do recommand it to a buyer, but I will state that it leaves you wanting more and not satisfying your taste for a full story worth a five star rating at the end.
Although this novel is not necessarily the most historically accurate, it is nonetheless a vivid and absorbing tale of the Wars of the Roses. Ms O'Brien has created a likeable character in Anne Neville, and has managed to depict her life in such an imaginative way that it kept me hooked. Both her marriage to the Prince of Lancaster, and her time trapped as a kitchen maid, make for a very interesting novel. The first of these absolutely happened and the second is considered to have happened, although the details are not known to us. This of course gave the author opportunity for dramatic license, and I feel she succeeded in creating an exciting and yet still plausible account.
I enjoyed the romantic aspect of this novel also, and I felt it had undertones of a 'damsel in distress' story, where the goodly prince comes to the rescue. Yet this is not to say that Anne was a weak woman, rather I found her to be quite courageous. Also the prince wasn't the stereotypical prince, as Richard was depicted as a quiet and not altogether handsome man. It is the Prince of Lancaster that is depicted as the golden, handsome prince, whereas he in fact turned out to be a cruel man. I enjoyed this slight twist of a much-told romantic tale.
One small thing that did bother me was the author's use of the terms 'the Countess' and 'the Earl' when talking of Anne's parents. Of course those were exactly their titles, but considering this novel was told from a first person perspective it didn't seem natural for Anne to have refered to her own parents in that manner. Especially as the author was trying to create a sense of the strong feelings that Anne held for both of them.
The portrayal of the relationship between Anne and her sister Isabel was intriguing, and the author played upon the fact that the Beauchamp inheritance (from their mother) was heavily disputed between their husbands. I enjoyed reading of the political manouvering that occured during the dispute. Particularly interesting was that their mother was still alive during this time. It saddened me to think of a woman being treated as though she were already dead, having been pushed into a life of seclusion. Often women were given no other choice, and Anne Beauchamp's plight is proof of this.
Overall, a wonderfully written novel that would be a great addition to a bookshelf filled with other Wars of the Roses novels as mine is.
