I very much enjoyed reading "The Troubles of Johnny Cannon." My oldest son, age 12, read it first and said to me, "That book dad bought is really funny." Later, when he had finished reading it, he repeated that statement and followed it up with, "We should buy a bunch of copies and give them to people." I'm not sure where he came up with that idea. It's not like we are in the habit of buying books to give away. After my oldest son finished the book, I read it to my 3rd and 5th graders. They both enjoyed it. I liked the humorous style plus I learned a few things about the Bay of Pigs that I would likely have never gotten any other way. It gave me the opportunity to discuss race relations and the cold war with my children, all while they were thoroughly entertained. I am looking forward to Isaiah Cambell's next book.Tags : The Troubles of Johnny Cannon [Isaiah Campbell] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. “A boy with a highly original voice winces his way into the bewildering world of adults during a neglected moment in American history” (Newbery Medalist Richard Peck) in this heroic coming-of-age novel.

Johnny Cannon’s got problems. Awesome book! Great author.
I love reading "The Troubles of Johnny Cannon." It's a smart, fun, non-stop action-adventure. It's so funny that I laughed out loud. When my 11-year-old son started reading it tonight, he was laughing so hard I couldn't understand him trying to explain which part was so hilarious. I let him stay up past bedtime to keep reading, but finally had to stop him so he'd go to sleep and have some of the book left to read tomorrow. Buy it. Read it. Then buy it for a friend.
Johnny Cannon has quite a personality. While I read, whoever was sitting in the same room with me could hear me laughing at this voice of that makes me think of a 1960's Huckleberry Finn. My favorite episode, without giving too much away, had to do with a butchered ponytail. While Johnny's voice is unselfconsciously funny, it is also earnest about sorting through life's situations to find meaning, and he is teachable. What helps him to realize that people are not just the stereotypes we tend to stick to them? History. Johnny is not a big fan of school, but he does find this one subject applicable to life. He keeps a notebook about what he learns from history in the past and history in his immediate life with bullies and others. He calls the book "Johnny Cannon's Guide to Surviving Yesterday," and what he writes really does help him to survive. Johnny says, "The reason we study [history] is so we can keep today from being as bad as yesterday was." This statement is not just a nice bit of wisdom; it is fulfilled in the novel in several ways, which you can discover as you read.
I have to admit, I knew almost nothing about the Bay of Pigs invasion before reading this book and learned a lot while not feeling lectured. This book is good for any age, but its voice, humor, tensions, and meaning will keep 5th-8th graders turning pages. This is the kind of historical fiction we need--well-researched literature that makes us think long after reading the book and doesn't bore us.
This is an outstanding book, enjoyable even for adults. It is a fun way to learn some history along with great adventure. There are many laughable moments and it highly keeps your interest.
I really enjoyed reading "The Troubles of Johnny Cannon". It was very well written and kept me wanting to see more of what happened to him. There was mystery, action, suspense, and lots of times to laugh. What an adventurous boy he is. I would recommend this to anyone...it is not just a book for youth, although it is very historically informative, so I would certainly recommend it to them. But, as an adult, I enjoyed it very much!
This is a great historical fiction book for kids. Our son read this and loved it. Kept his interest and for a summer school assignment. He is 11 and great for kids. Serious book with serious topics but presented in a well written manner.
